The Academic Staff Association of Wits University (ASAWU) is a registered trade union with the Department of Labour. ASAWU represents the interests of the academic staff of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). We operate according to our Constitution as adopted by the membership and approved by the Registrar for Labour Relations.

We currently have over 700 members and are in negotiations over the formulation of a recognition agreement with the University. Each member pays a monthly subscription fee, which is used to cover operational costs. ASAWU is led by an Executive Committee that is elected at the Annual General Meeting.

We are a registered trade union with the Department of Labour. We work closely with the other trade unions at Wits, namely ALTSA and NEHAWU, as well as other stakeholder groups in order to ensure that the Wits environment is a suitable working, studying and living environment for all.
