Peace Accord

On Wednesday 19 October, ASAWU hosted a meeting that was aimed at proposing peaceful dialogue as a solution to the impasse at Wits and to invite ways of thinking about how to end the cycle of violence. The event was organised by Prof Vishwas Satgar with the knowledge and support of the Union executive. The meeting took place at Trinity Church (next to the School of Arts & WAM). Invited speakers were Jay Naidoo, Adv Thuli Madonsela, and Fr Graham Pugin. All members of the Wits community were invited.

The event was considered controversial by some students, who disrupted it and asked for it to be moved to the concourse of Solomon Mahlangu house. You can read our statement about what happened on the day here.

The ASAWU Executive Committee endorses as a discussion document this proposal for a peace accord process at Wits. The document was prepared by Prof Vishwas Satgar for discussion by the Union. We are making it available here for the consideration of the union membership.
