Q: Who can join ASAWU?
Any Wits employee or Wits staff member can join ASAWU. However, ASAWU only bargains for its bargaining unit: academics. It is thus prudent for non-academic staff members to join unions that will represent their constituency (i.e. NEHAWU, ALTSA etc.)
Q: Can I join ASAWU if I am on a temporary or fixed-term contract?
Yes indeed, the determining factor is whether or not an employment relationship exists between the Employee (academic staff) and the Employer (Wits University).
Q: How can I join ASAWU?
By completing the online membership form which is available on ASAWU’s website – simply navigate to the Join page here. You can also directly request a soft copy of the membership from ASAWU office, complete the form and send it back to the office on these e-mail addresses: Vincent.firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
Q: What can ASAWU do for me?
Amongst a list of other things, ASAWU negotiates improved salaries, improved or better working conditions, represents members at disciplinary hearings and provides labour related advice to it members
Q: Can I join ASAWU and receive assistance regarding a pre-existing issue?
Yes. However, upon joining, a member needs to wait a period of three months to become a member in good standing before any action is taken relating to the member’s matter. This applies to all members joining ASAWU.
Q: What are the associated membership fees?
The current association’s membership fee is set at R50.00 any increase to the current fee will be duly communicated to the ASAWU membership accordingly.
Q: What are the payment methods?
At this stage, deductions are made from members’ salary through a payroll stop-order system every month into ASAWU’s account.
Q: How can I get involved in leading / representing ASAWU?
ASAWU holds an annual general meeting every year. It is at the AGM where executive members are elected into the ASAWU leadership. The election takes place after members have been nominated by the executive. Nominations at the AGM are also accepted.
Q: What happens if I leave the University – how do I cancel my membership?
Upon departure from the University, payroll informs ASAWU of the member’s departure and automatically stops deductions.
